The array’s installation began in September 2023, and was overseen by the business park – though was initiated and coordinated by SwissQprint, one of its largest tenants.
The array, capable of generating 613 MWh of electricity a year, will help guarantee a source of renewable energy to the park’s 21 businesses, and is linked to eight electric vehicle charging stations.
While the SwissQprint HQ had been free of fossil-fuel related energy since it took up residence in the newly-built park in 2014, the new panels will guarantee minimal lifetime emissions by providing a local source of power, cutting transmission losses.
“The solar project brings us a big step forward in terms of sustainability and self-sufficiency,” says Reto Eicher, co-owner of SwissQprint and the project coordinator.
SwissQprint's buildings were already highly energy efficient, with interiors heated and cooled by a groundwater heat-exchange system, which itself will soon be powered by the solar array.
The site's sawtooth roof design, similarly, allows in a huge amount of natural light, in turn minimising the use of electrical lighting.
