"We've got to take on the challenges [of the recession], it's no good just hoping things will get better – we have to try and make them better," said Filler.
"If it's difficult for printers, it's difficult for suppliers; we've all got to work together."
One of the key areas he highlighted was suppliers looking at creative ways to help printers finance investments.
"When you're in a recession, it's the companies that try and invest and do something that are often best placed when things get better. You've got to speculate to accumulate."
He added that the same message applies to suppliers yet to commit to exhibiting at Ipex next May, echoing the view of outgoing Picon chairman and Heidelberg UK managing director, George Clarke.
Filler, who officially took over the two-year role as chair last Friday (3 July) at Picon's annual general meeting, added: "We have to look at Ipex as a positive way forward. The show is a way of shouting from the rooftops how good the printing industry is in the UK."
He is also keen to grow the body's membership services and lobbying activities, following the recent respective successes of its Digital Focus Forum and its part in the government increasing capital allowances.

Screen UK managing director Brian Filler has taken the reins at manufacturer and supplier body Picon and issued a clarion call for members to "keep positive" and work closer with printers.
