As revealed by PrintWeek last week, Scanlon was one of four contenders to in the running to pick up the business, along with Paragon (last week thought to be the frontrunner), MBA Group and Tangent Communications.
Vertis has confirmed it has reached an agreement in principle with Scanlon who will buy the business through his company Overgoal, formed for the purpose of the acquisition.
Vertis declined to comment further before the sale is formally completed which is expected to happen this Friday (30 September). Scanlon will acquire the company's operations in Leicester, Croydon, Swindon and its marketing technology arm in Clerkenwell, London.
The completion of the sale will bring to an end Vertis' involvement in the UK direct mail sector and focus its efforts on its core US market. Vertis signalled its intentions to exit the UK DM market in August after sending out an information memorandum and appointing George Moore as executive chairman to oversee the process.
Using acquisition vehicle TP8, a wholly owned subsidiary of TP3 (formerly Thomas Potts), Scanlon also acquired packaging business Boxstar this week.
The former Adare director is also chairman of Swindon-based DM and data business StreamGWC, which he sold to print management group TripleArc at the start of the year.
