The Nottingham-based business bought the machine, which has been installed in the past few weeks, from Terry Cooper Services (TCS).
The perfect binder features a colour touchscreen interface and is suitable for on-demand customised applications, producing single books from two to 600 sheets.
The BB3002 EVA adapts automatically to the thickness of each job, which reduces loss of productivity and enables a top speed of 650 cycles/hr. The device can produce a variety of books ranging from small square books to large custom sizes.
Russell Press managing director Mike Coates said: “We wanted to add value to what we do and so looked into offering wings on the covers of our perfect-bound books and magazines. It is another string to our bow.
“We were being asked for the capability more and more and there is a lot of competition for short-run book production, so if you can offer something a little bit extra it can help you stand out.
“We no longer need to outsource and that means we keep control of the budget and the timings. It is easier to set up and faster so we can be more productive.”
Coates said that energy consumption was also a consideration when researching available choices as the company has ISO 14001 certification. He confirmed that the 3002 system has much lower energy consumption than the firm’s older machine.
“Our older system was also a two-man operation but the new binder only requires one. This frees up a member of staff to work in other departments ensuring a smooth end-to-end workflow,” said Coates.
“It has only been in a few a weeks but the binder is already making a significant difference thanks to an improved bind, plus an expansion to the services we can offer cost-effectively in-house.”
The company, which offers litho and digital services, also operates a Heidelberg Speedmaster SM 75, a Heidelberg CD 102 and three Konica Minolta bizhub printers.
The Russell Press, which has 16 staff and a £1m turnover, works with charities, social enterprises and campaigning organisations and also has a growing list of corporate and public sector clients.
