RR Donnelley buys custom packaging provider Genesis

Chicago-based RR Donnelly has announced the acquisition of Genesis Packaging & Design, a full service provider of custom packaging solutions, including design, printing, die cutting, finishing and assembling based in nearby Lemont, IL.

Genesis produces packaging for a host of consumer-facing industries, including food and beverage producers, pharmaceutical companies, consumer electronics manufacturers, retailers, consumer packaged goods producers and educational publishers. It also offers other services, including the design and production of point-of-purchase displays and signage.

In an interview with PrintWeek, RR Donnelley executive VP communications Doug Fitzgerald explained, "This acquisition further expands our ability to serve customers across a variety of industries with products that they will use in their manufacturing and assembly operations across North America. Genesis's close proximity to our substantial logistics operations in the Chicago area also make it very attractive to customers who need merchandising materials - such as POP and signage displays - shipped to retailers.  We are ideally placed to serve them."

Genesis Packaging's facility features a 65" Flexographic 6-color UV coating, in-line pre-print press that can print on a variety of substrates from 50gsm paper, 24pt linerboard, poly, foils, plastics, metallic and mylar. The company also touts its ability to print linerboard before it is made into corrugated packaging, enabling high-quality printing on what has traditionally been a difficult surface for logos and messaging. In 2008, Genesis also added a Preprint Flexo Press that prints two sides in one pass in 3/3 colors.

RR Donnelley has been very active over the past year, closing a number of printing facilities in the US, while also expanding into new businesses. Only last month, the company announced the acquisition of digital content distribution provider LibreDigital.

"We're really in the business of providing integrated communications solutions," said Fitzgerald. "We draw on acquisitions, internal expansions, collaboration with leading technology companies, and innovative in-house R&D to enable RR Donnelley to offer a unique portfolio of capabilities. The pace of change is accelerating; we're moving even faster to anticipate and be there with what customers want next."
