Repro India boosts capacity with four new Goss presses

Publishing giant Repro India is gearing up to add four new Goss presses as part of a major expansion.

Repro will install the presses at its units in Mahape, Navi Mumbai and in the Surat special economic zone (SEZ) in Sachin.

Two presses – the Goss Community SSC semi-commercial book presses – will be installed in the Sachin SEZ in December this year.

These presses are configured as one four-high tower with an SSC folder fed by two reel stands. Both will operate at a maximum speed of 35,000cph with differing cut-offs of 546mm and 578mm. They will be used exclusively for book printing.

The other two presses – Goss M-500 commercial presses – were destined for the company's magazine printing facility at Mahape and will arrive early next year, "augmenting the existing facility" there.

The M-500 runs at speeds up to 40,000cph and will be identically configured with four units and 578mm cut-offs.

Chief executive officer Sunil Unni told PrintWeek India: "Not only has Goss International proposed an excellent solution for the increased capacity we require, but the new M-500 and Community SSC presses will provide highly flexible, reliable production and proven print quality; advantages we can pass on to our customers. That's why we elected to work with Goss International on this project."

Repro India chairman Vinod Vohra said: "2008 will see us continue our focus on three key areas – education, expansion and value creation.

"Our focus on the education publishing segment has seen us acquire some large global educational publishers as clients, including publishers like Modern Publishing, Autumn Publishing, McGraw-Hill, Pearson, Longman, Oxford University Press and Heinemann."

Vohra added: "Our expansion strategy is to ensure that our infrastructure keeps pace with the newer market opportunities that we see opening up in Africa, US and UK.

"Outsourcing print solutions, even in a fluctuating global scenario, remains on the upswing, as it is core to the businesses of publishers."

Unni said that the company's revenue had grown 19 % in revenue with Rs 155 crore (£18.2m) in 2007-2008, and profits rose by 69% at Rs 15.55 crore (£1.83m).

"We are achieving rapid growth due to our ambitious goals… This expansion project will give the company the capability to supply 100m books to the children and educational book markets worldwide, but we intend to boost this figure to 200m in the short-term."

Repro India has many well-known clients in the educational sector including Microsoft, McGraw-Hill, IBM Learning Services, Encyclopaedia Britannica, Oxford University Press, Orient Longman, Igloo, Arcturus, Beaver Books and Dalmatian.
