Quebecor invests in Corby plant

Quebecor World is to install two KBA Compacta 818 72pp web presses at its Corby plant.

The site's managing director, Andrew Parker, said: "This investment will allow the Corby facility to capitalise on the UK's vibrant magazine and retail insert market."

The purchases are part of a 140m ($250m) European investment by Quebecor.

The first press is expected to be operational by the end of the year, with the other following early in 2007.

They are likely to replace older machines.

The investment in the Corby plant will also include  upgrading CTP operations, and the installation of a Ferag MiniDisc winding system.

"There is also a variety of other investment projects associated with this," added Parker.

The spend follows Amicus GPMS members at the plant voting to accept 6m worth of cost savings, including 70 redundancies last month.

Amicus GPMS East of England branch secretary Vernon Robson said: "It [the investment] offers security to remaining staff."
