Printers' dismay as Italians win Greatest Brits

UK book printers are sad and disappointed after an Italian firm won the deal to print Great Britons: The Great Debate, a book listing the nations favourite 100 public figures and based on the BBC television series.

Butler & Tanner tendered for the job but, according to joint managing director Peter Maunder, the publisher, National Portrait Gallery Publications, opted for the lower price offered by Conti Tipocolor in Florence.

"The only realistic UK suppliers for colour book printing are ourselves and Bath Press, so they weren't spoilt for choice," added Maunder. "But it's still disappointing and there are numerous examples of British firms looking abroad."

National Portrait Gallery Publications' head of trading, Robert Carr-Archer, said: "We thought that it would go to a UK printer, as there's a likelihood of reprints. But the Italian printer was very competitive and could deliver on schedule."
