Stokes’ son Matteo was born in May 2010 with a congenital cataract, a rare disorder that affects around 200 children a year, and doctors said the growth should not be removed. When Matteo’s parents were directed to GOSH for a second opinion, where Matteo underwent tests and headed straight for surgery to have the cataract removed.
Since the initial surgery, Matteo has had two more operations and visits GOSH every four to six weeks for aftercare to strengthen his eye.
Stokes raised over £8,000 at his first golf day, with 124 enthusiasts attending in 2011 and hopes to nearly match its success at this year’s event, which will be held at the Weald of Kent golf course in Headcorn on 15 May.
Individual golfers can join the fundraising event for £57.50, or enter two rival teams of two players for £230 altogether. In return participants will get a bacon sandwich breakfast, an 18-hole game and a three course dinner at The Weald with prize giving.
