Printcafe expands its product line-up

Printcafe unveiled additions to its MIS line-up to over 700 visitors at its Connect 2002 users conference in Las Vegas this week.

It will mount a concerted push into Europe later this year following its IPO, which will see it raise around 25m ($37m) to pay off some of the debt it acquired during its formative acquisition phase.

The firm will move from its current offices in Windsor to Hemel Hempstead. The move into Europe comes after the release of a new version of Hagen, which has been developed to include foreign-language support and tools to support different currencies and taxation methods.

Following the launch at Ipex of its pre-press Connector, which allows its MIS to communicate with third-party pre-press workflows, it is developing Connectors to interface with other parts of the print process.

The first, Press Connector, will be shown at Graph Expo and released by the end of the year. Initial versions will interface with Komori and MAN Roland presses. Other Connectors under development include finishing, fulfilment and paper procurement. All are based on JDF to enable connection to any compatible third-party system. The pre-press Connector currently only works with sister firm Creos Prinergy workflow.

Previewed for the first time at Connect was Prime, a production-planning application that takes job details from an MIS and uses them to generate imposition templates. The software is currently at alpha stage. Although similar to ScenicSofts UpFront production planning tool, Printcafe claims it is far more closely integrated with the MIS. "This is the first step of taking job details from MIS to set up equipment to produce a job," said president and chief executive Marc Olin (pictured). "Commerce and content paths are becoming closer."

The firms Logic system has been upgraded with a new version based on Microsofts SQL database.

Printersite Internal is a new version of the firms e-commerce module designed to allow sales staff on the road to digitally produce and submit requests for quotes (RFQ). It differs from the firms Printellect system in that it connects directly into the MIS database rather than relying on a second standalone database. PrintSmith Composer is a new module for its quickprint and small commercial MIS for online creation and proofing.
