Pre-press triumphs at InterTech awards

Pre-press technologies dominated at this year's InterTech Technology Awards, where Alwan, EskoArtwork, HiFlex and Kodak all received recognition.

Awards went to Alwan's Dynamic DeviceLinks, EskoArtwork's Neo, HiFlex's MIS and web-to-print software, and Kodak's Flexcel NX Digital Flexographic System.

Elie Khoury, founder and president of Alwan, said: "The graphic arts community holds the InterTech Award in high esteem, and knows that the judges' assessments are meaningful confirmations of a technology's potential value."

Judges praised Alwan's Dynamic DeviceLinks, which powers its CMYK Optimizer family of products, for its ink savings and ability to solve colour conversion problems for digital presses.

Meanwhile, EskoArtwork chief executive Carsten Knudsen said it was an "extreme honour" to have picked up an award for the third year running.

The Belgian-based company had previously been recognised for its DeskPack 3-dX, in 2007, and Esko WebCenter, in 2006.

Judges praised Neo's speed, on-the-fly functionality and ability to build and manipulate PDFs without restriction, while HiFlex's MIS was recognised for its use of JDF to enable total automation from procurement through to scheduling.

Meanwhile, Kodak impressed the judges with the "vast improvement" in resolution, stability, quality and productivity offered by its digital flexographic platemaking system.

Consumables suppliers Sun Chemical and MetalFX also picked up gongs, as did large-format digital press manufacturer Inca and inkjet manufacturer Xaar. The final winner was Heidelberg, who picked up awards for its Polar finishing kit and in-line colour control.

The coveted InterTech stars, which are sponsored by the Printing Industries of America/Graphical Arts Technical Foundation (PIA/GATF), are awarded for technological innovation and excellence.

This year the judges received 28 nominations from 21 companies, of which 10 were selected to receive an award.

The stars will be presented to winners during the 2008 PIA/GATF Premier Print Awards Gala on 26 October in Chicago.
