Pindar to cut 14 staff after buying new kit

Commercial printer Pindar is set to make 14 redundancies at its Preston plant, as well as decommissioning two ageing Heidelberg machines.

Nine posts in the pressroom of the sheetfed facility are set to go, along with five from the bindery.

According to chairman Andrew Pindar, the redundancies were a necessity due to new machinery. The company has invested more than £18m over the last two years.

Pindar said: "We have invested in production capacity; there is less need for the labour and we cannot go on carrying as many people as we have.

"It is with regret that these changes will necessitate a reduction in staffing. This decision has not been taken lightly, but will enable the Preston site to continue to provide an efficient and appropriate service to ensure the longevity of the business."

Three new presses have been installed at Preston in two years, adding new techniques such as fragrancing and cut-off lengths. The company employs 800 people across the UK, with 140 at the Preston plant.
