Photo finishers & low-cost options

Jo Francis tracks down the solutions to your technical troubles

Q I need a printing or finishing supplier that can produce photo wallets. These were fairly commonplace before everyone had digital cameras and are a made-up paper wallet that is glued on the sides, has a fold-over flap, plus a place to put your CD and negatives.  The main problem seems to be finding a finisher that can handle the complex gluing and folding. Do you have any ideas?

A Unless there is some hidden complexity to the job, on the face of it this sounds fairly straightforward. Friedheim's Stuart Bamford suggested calling K&L Laminators (01273 748890). Clearly the firm does more than laminating, because according to K&L's Emma Miles they have a Fidia folder/gluer that can handle the job, or if it's a very short run they can do it by hand. She also mentioned that they can put an expandable gusset in the wallet if required. Thanks also to Jon Fennell, of printweek.com forums fame, he suggested talking to Colin Hatch at the Binding Partnership (01277 633160). Colin says the firm already offers what he calls ‘display books', which serve a similar purpose and are essentially a series of pockets that are ‘welded' into a cover. However, the firm can also produce bespoke products, so if you pass on the specs of the job Colin says he's sure he can help.

Q I'm struggling to find a low-cost web or litho printer in the UK. We need to produce A5 16pp four-colour 50,000 runs twice a month. We also typically need to print two-sided four-colour A4 leaflets in runs of 100,000 four or five times a month. Ideally, and I know it's a big ask, we want the lowest cost (ie the most competitive) printers in the UK? Failing that, which countries would you recommend for low-cost printing of the type we require: Poland, China or India?

A Frankly Elwyn, I'm struggling to believe that you're struggling to find a low cost printer in the UK! That said, I think you should focus on good value rather than just cheapest price, as surely there's no point paying the lowest unit price if the job doesn't pass muster or isn't delivered on time. I suggest searching http://directory.printweek.com and hitting the phone to come up with some quotes. And as for low cost printing overseas, I think the jobs you're looking to place are too small to benefit from off-shoring.
