PCL Digital invests in HP Indigo 5500 and Enfocus Switch

Birmingham-based PCL Digital has invested £250,000 in an HP Indigo upgrade and new Enfocus Switch workflow.

The £500,000 turnover printers has upgraded its seven-year-old HP Indigo 3050 to an Indigo 5500 to boost capacity, with the aim of doubling turnover within five years.

The 5500’s speed is the same as its predecessor’s, but the 5500 features two added paper feeder trays.

“That means we can be running a job while we’re loading the next one up. I would expect us to double what we’re doing now within two years,” said Nick Westley-Smith, director at PCL Digital.

Westley-Smith added that the installation of Enfocus Switch at the end of 2013 would be key to boosting capacity.

He said: “To push more work through the press we’ve got to get it in and out quicker. For the last few years we’ve been manually getting in touch with people to quote, collecting the files from email or FTP, then manually imposing it, dropping it on the press, creating the delivery notes and then getting in touch with the customer to tell them the job’s going out.”

The new system, working in conjunction with an existing custom-built FileMaker solution and Redtie quoting software, would automate 70% of this process, Westley-Smith estimated.

The new HP Indigo also offers six colours plus white rather than four colours.

“Only a small percentage of our work is spot colour work but this will allow us to match 96% of pantone colours using orange and violet, which will be valuable for brand matching and agency work,” said Westley-Smith. "And the white will allow us to print on dark and coloured stock."

PCL Digital has also taken on a new production staff member. The company hopes future growth will lead to further job creation and to expansion of its in-house finishing suite.
