Page Bros has expanded into a new business area with the acquisition of specialist publisher Art Angels.

Both companies are based in Norwich.

Art Angels was established 31 years ago and specialises in cards, notebooks and other stationery products featuring the work of contemporary artists, including Angela Harding and Angie Lewin.

Art Angels co-founders and directors Chris Cordingly and Judith Bennett-Rees were looking for a suitable buyer to take over the business as they planned their exit strategy.

Alex Tuya, CEO at Page Bros, said: “I think from the first day we met, mutually we felt this is someone we want to work with.

“For us it made total sense. We print, we fulfil and we do a lot of fulfilment and distribution work – it’s one of our big areas. It’s a perfect partnership.”

The deal was completed in January. The terms were not disclosed.

Bennett-Rees is stepping back from the business, while Cordingly remains with Art Angels in a part-time role.

The duo said: “This is a really exciting partnership for Art Angels that will keep the business in Norwich and provide a platform for continued growth.

“It was clear from the outset that culturally Page Bros Group were the right partners for us and we are looking forward to working together.”

Tuya commented: “This is a partnership with a huge potential for both Art Angels and the existing Page Bros operations.

“The range of capabilities we have in the group, from website and e-commerce management down to print manufacturing, storage and fulfilment will equip Art Angels with added agility and scalability, while achieving significant synergies in our operations.”

He said the firm was committed to giving full continuity to Art Angels' ethos and operations while enabling the business to achieve its next stage of growth.

“Chris and Judy are an inspiration and I am pleased and excited to continue working with them in the evolution of Art Angels within the Page Bros group.”

He said that while some of the print work would be brought in-house, Page Bros would continue to work with Art Angels’ existing print supplier Swallowtail, also based near Norwich.

Page Bros employs 140 and has sales of around £15m. It operates from three sites in the city, with a total space of around 9,300sqm.

It is one of the UK’s oldest printing businesses, having been established in 1746.

Today the group’s operations encompass Page Bros Print, Page Bros Create, Page Bros Fulfill and Page Bros Enable.

Art Angels employs a team of six, who will now benefit from the support of its new parent group. It has sales of more than £1m.

Rory Hill has recently joined Art Angels as operations manager, taking up his new position in January. He brings a wealth of retail experience to the role.
