Packaging company starts talks over job cuts

Up to 45 jobs are at risk at Mayr-Melnhof Packaging UK (MMP) after the packaging company entered into a consultation process with staff representatives.

The potential redundancies will be made across the company's Liverpool and Deeside, although it is understood the majority will be at the Liverpool, Bootle site.

Unite representative Phil Morgan said: "Up to now we have already held a couple of meetings with the company to try and get that figure reduced.

"We will meet with company representatives next week."

However, he confirmed that the company was not looking to close the site, and that the potential redundancies were a result of the "general state of the marketplace".

MMP has also announced a £1.6m investment in new and upgraded equipment in the finishing department of its Liverpool plant.

It is coupled with a relocation of business and the company has said this will make the plant more "streamlined and competitive".

The Bootle site serves the cereal, pet food and confectionery markets. It specialises in UV printing, in-house design and reprographics, inline CD, offset-laminating.

The Deeside plant provides products for the confectionery and food packaging markets.

Austria-based MM Packaging employs 5,600 employees across 28 locations.
