Praise for passionate and dedicated leader

Canon's Barlow lauded as he steps back after four decades

Barlow: Barnsley boy done good

Wayne Barlow has retired after a stellar 40-year career at Canon that spanned the formative period when digital printing devices first emerged and then subsequently became mainstream.

Barnsley-born Barlow originally trained as a precision toolmaker and studied electronics and control engineering, before heading south to join the Japanese manufacturer in February 1985.

Speaking to Printweek for our special Digital Focus supplement marking digital printing’s progression and the latest developments at last year’s Drupa, Barlow said: “In 1985 I was fortunate to witness a prototype full-colour digital inkjet printer at the Canon Expo held in Westminster.”

This was to become the BJ-80, Canon’s first device using Bubble Jet inkjet technology. It was followed by the ground-breaking Canon CLC-1 colour laser printer/copier.

“Through the ’90s there was a chain reaction of explosions of digital invention and creativity from both manufacturers and customers, who collectively pushed the boundaries of the technology,” Barlow added.

Barlow held a range of roles at Canon UK during his career, most recently heading up its Professional Print business.

His post on LinkedIn announcing his retirement has already garnered more than 120 comments from industry friends and colleagues in an outpouring of affection and respect.

Barlow reminisced that he had left Barnsley with a “heavy heart” back in 1985 and would be driving down the “Retirement 1 motorway” today with a heavy heart again, but filled with hope and excitement for his next adventure.

“People have often asked me my ‘why did you stay with Canon for 40 years and the answer is simple – Canon was the very best company in the world = Dantotsu.”

The Japanese word Dantotsu can be translated as “the best of the best” or “unparalleled”.

Canon UK national sales manager for graphic arts Wayne Kershaw will succeed Barlow. Kershaw is also highly-experienced at the manufacturer, having worked at Canon for 27 years.

He paid tribute to Barlow’s positive impact personally and professionally, and posted: “Wayne, you have been a passionate, dedicated leader, and moreover mentor. Your knowledge and wisdom has helped to shape my career and for that I am eternally grateful.

“Your energy for success for yourself and all around you is infectious. It has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life working and learning alongside you. Have a great well deserved retirement.”

Canon will showcase its latest tech at the upcoming Hunkeler Innovationdays event later this month, where the manufacturer will also celebrate its first decade in the sheetfed inkjet production space.
