Swindon commercial printer Orchard Press has given its production site a makeover after reaching £1m in sales.

The family-owned independent printer has been busy over the summer, modernising its operations with a brand-new website and renovated production site with new decor, flooring and washrooms.

Forecast to breach £1.1m this year, the company decided it was time for a facelift to reflect its growing size.

Jason Grubb, co-owner and director, said the changes were “all about improving both the working environment for our team and the service we offer to our clients”.

“Reaching £1.1m in sales is a very proud moment for all of us. It shows that our investment, both in our services and our people, is paying off. We are particularly proud to achieve this while also nearing the incredible goal of being debt-free. It’s a testament to the hard work of our entire team.”

Speaking to Printweek, he added that many of the improvements have been aimed to continue many of the gains Orchard Press made to achieve its BPIF Health & Safety Seal of Excellence accreditation in January 2024.

“We’ve been continuously improving,” said Grubb.

“We’ve replaced all the workshop flooring with Duramat [floor tiles] which was a lot better than what we had previously – it’s all these tiny points that we’re slowly picking off the list. It’s a never-ending process, health and safety, but we’re ticking them off.”

Orchard Press’ new website, live in July, has helped the firm smooth its approach to clients. Now with proper native mobile integration, the site also has a direct portal for customers to the firm’s Accura MIS.

“For the general public, it works very well – but that really takes it to the next step for clients, to be able to log in and look after their own print management,” Grubb said.

The firm currently runs three Ricoh digital presses, a Pro C7100, C7200 and C5300, and an RMGT four-colour press on litho; wide-format is run through two Roland DG and Epson machines.

With this mix, Grubb said Orchard Press can take on almost any job it’s approached for, and has even begun taking on trade work from local copy shops.

“We’ve got a really good diverse customer base, and we take in walk-in work, too, which we have found quite lucrative over the last couple of years, truthfully,” he said.

“Even for someone walking in off the street, perhaps for an order of service, we’ll sit down with them in the reception and show them the samples.

“Often as not, that’s it, but sometimes they’ll turn around and mention that they work for a company that needs business – all of a sudden, I’m popping out to see them, and we’re quoting them for a whole list of other items. Just meeting people opens doors and enables us to generate that new business.”

Orchard Press employs 10 at its Swindon site, and will celebrate its 35th year in business this year.
