Owing to its location at the very tip of the UK, Orcadian often has a 10-day turnaround when work needs to be sent out, leaving it struggling to keep up with today's on-demand world.
Print manager Mervyn Ward said: "We wanted to be able to provide customers with a complete job in house. With carriage both ways, it wasn’t very cost-effective. In some instances it could treble the price of a job.
"We would often send a number of jobs together, which also impacted on delivery times. Now we can complete the work faster and much more cost-effectively."
He added that the company had been looking into the possibility of investing in a laminator for some years, but the recent rise of short-run fast-turnaround work had forced its hand.
"The Foliant is helping us to improve our service with the ability to complete a range of work from book covers to cards. From day one of its installation we have been winning new work from existing customers," he said.
Orcadian's Taurus runs at 30mpm and features a rising pile back-separation stream feeder and a suction paper feed head. Its compact design incorporates feeder, laminator and a sheet separator. It was installed with a Horizon paper jogger.
The 40-employee company has operated on the island for 200 years.
