Newly developed halftone flexo dot makes gradations 'like offset litho'

Screen has developed a new halftone dot for the flexo and letterpress industries, which it claimed can produce gradations as smooth as offset litho printing at 200lpi.

The company said the Flexodot 4800, which has been designed to take advantage of the 4,800dpi PlateRite FX870II and FX1524 platesetters, enables creation of very precise halftone dots.

The Japanese-manufactured platesetters feature a high-powered imaging head and an auto-balance function that ensures stable drum rotation, enabling high-quality imaging.

Screen said that the Flexodot 4800 dots produce "smooth, natural-looking gradations" even in extreme highlight areas, as well as enabling an increased resolution that "significantly improves" the smoothness of curves and diagonals.

According to Screen, the dots are significantly smaller than those used in 2,400dpi production.

The firm said: "Flexodot 4800 gradations are comparable to those produced in offset, while maintaining the superior density expected from flexo printing."
