New Year predictions - Print Research International's John Charnock

John Charnock, managing director, Print Research International

What trend do you think 2012 will be remembered for?

I want to say Landa and Nano as this is the year that this was launched.  When it does come out, people will reference the Drupa launch the same way they do for Indigo. However, I think more appropriately 2012 is also the turning point where digital printing and especially inkjet really did come of age, with more machines of industrial capability. The industrial press manufacturers have started to take "toytown" seriously.

What do you think will represent the single biggest opportunity for printers in 2013 and why?

For many printers there are almost too many opportunities. Large format, 3D, digital, multi-channel communication, etc. The secret is choosing which ones to pursue and which ones not to. The consolidation of our industry is well underway and printers need to become entrepreneurial in their outlook and leverage some of those opportunities to their advantage. That does not mean do it all, however; printers must focus on what their customers require and deliver appropriate solutions.

What do you think will represent the single biggest threat for printers in 2013 and why?

Over-leverage, lack of resources and doing many things half-heartedly instead of fewer things really well.

What’s the one thing that the industry should do more of, or do better, in 2013?

Be business men/women, run the business based on knowledge, leadership and belief that they are doing it right. Oh and stop apologising for being in print.

What was your highlight of 2012?

I have to say it was working with Benny and his team on the Landa stand at Drupa; it's not often you get to be part of such a phenomenon.

What are your hopes for 2013?

Some stability and confidence returning to the business. I am not sure it will happen but I hope we move some way towards that.

What was the most important thing that you learnt in 2012?

Over the year I have been into many really wonderful businesses that have such potential, the owners are hardworking and dedicated but have not been rewarded for that hard work because times are tough. But I have seen businesses that are able to maintain and increase profit and with some focus have a very positive outlook. And I am very proud to be part of that! Similarly I have mentored a number of wonderful MA students who have taught me a lot and they represent our future - we don't recognise that as an industry.

What will you do differently in 2013?

Try to leverage on 2012 – it was a very positive year for me.

What does the industry need to do differently in 2013?

Believe in the value it offers, understand what it is good at and what it is not so good at and be prepared to adapt for the better.
