If possible, what positives are you able to draw on from the experiences of 2020?
We have used 2020 to reflect on what we’re good at and have invested in technology to help us. We’ve bought a new hybrid printer that will open up some new markets as well as being able to do the same as our two previous machines which will save us money.
We’re implementing a new MIS that should also save time and money plus give our clients the ability to feel encompassed within it so they’re able to have more control over their jobs. The main positive has been in seeing our team pull together and put in solid performances day after day when it has been such a bad time for most of us.
I am very proud to say I am part of Team RMC. Although we started on the process of an MBO before Covid-19 reared its ugly head, we’ve been able to complete that which is a positive too.
What trend do you think has been accelerated because of the pandemic?
Virtual technology such as Zoom for meetings; but the advances in online exhibitions have been amazing. It’s not something we’re involved in but Anthony Smith at ADB has shown me their system and it’s impressive.
I was hoping to use it next year if I can get enough print companies interested in exhibiting in an online platform to promote print as a career for school, college and university leavers. The idea being we all have a stand to showcase and explain what we can do in order to attract talent into print but then we’ve got those online areas for the rest of the year to rebrand as a sales showroom. It is in its infancy at the moment, but I am very keen to speak with any companies that would like to progress the idea.
What do you think will represent the single biggest opportunity for printers in 2021 and why?
Hopefully the vaccine will be in place and the government will let us all trade again as usual. I don’t know what Brexit will hold for us but think that on top of the pandemic can’t be good news.
What are your hopes for 2021?
I just hope we can get back to similar levels of work at early 2020 to be honest. I really hope the industry picks up for everyone. I don’t want to see anyone fail as it will be through no fault of their own – some of our clients are still standing with no work since March which is unbelievable. If I could ask Santa for one thing it would be to see the print industry truly thrive next year…
We can't believe we're asking this question for the fourth year running: what is your one-word view on Brexit?
Shitshow.
What was the best piece of advice you have ever been given?
Work hard and be nice to people.
What, if anything, will you do differently in 2021?
I’ll be more laid back, and I’ll appreciate seeing people more. I’ll say hello to strangers and smile as much as I can (hopefully without the mask). I’ve always been incredibly grateful for the team I have around me but I will try and show my appreciation more.
What’s your favourite Christmas cracker joke?
What do elves learn at school?
The Elfabet.
(my five-year-old daughter taught me that this year)
Sprouts: yes or no?
No, absolutely not.
Are you making any New Year's resolutions? If so, what?
To do more and be a good example to my daughter.
