New Year Predictions - Bryan Godwyn's take on 2011

Bryan Godwyn, managing director, Intelligent Finishing Systems

What do you think will be the greatest opportunity for and threat to printers next year?
It is true there has been, and may still be to some extent, over capacity in the market and I guess that is a threat to some printers. But equally, what an opportunity for those printers who have invested and can go for the business left out there. There is also growth potential coming from the UK and other European markets as we come out of recession. There will be great opportunities out there for those who are efficient and can provide a good service to the market.

How important do you think Northprint will be?
Northprint has traditionally been a great machinery show and, with the exception of two years ago, has always provided a great boost to the print industry. It gets the industry together and united and this show will probably be even more important than ever. Digital technology continues to grow at an incredible pace bringing challenges and yet more opportunities so Northprint will be a further chance for printers to see real solutions to help their businesses.

What do you believe is the most under-recognised aspect in printing that is likely to become more important in 2010?

I am biased but finishing is so often the poor relation. It is the last process of any job and if you get it wrong you have to start again. I see more and more printers bringing finishing in house. It is becoming cheaper and more efficient to do it yourself nowadays. Run lengths are shorter, machinery footprints are smaller, skill levels lower and capital investment more affordable. It makes good business sense now to offer everything yourself to your customers.

What can the industry do to increase its profile next year?

Print is still a massive industry in its own right and its voice should be heard louder and clearer. The BPIF and other trade bodies need to work hard  for the print industry and make its voice known. Its way up there in terms of importance to the UK trade but no one really talks about it. This needs to change and our politicians need to recognise this industry as a massive contributor to the UK's trade income.

What will you do differently next year?
Next year will be the year in which I celebrate my 25th wedding anniversary so its a very special year. I'd love to take Julie on the honeymoon she never had but as the date conflicts with Northprint I'll just take my golf clubs to Harrogate and play around there. Seriously though, next year I'll probably have to book a caddy on holiday it seems a bit unfair to ask Julie to keep carrying my golf bag, after all she deserves a holiday too.
