The mailing firm's MD forsees a future where smaller firms band together to keep a competitive edge.

What positives are you able to draw on from the experiences of 2023?
2023 really didn’t turn out to be as difficult as predicted. Yes, it was a challenge, but we came through it. Many clients have been resilient, paper prices stabilised and energy costs reduced.

What trend (business or technology) do you think has been accelerated because of the impact of inflation?
I think that there will be an ongoing consolidation within the industry. Inflation has surprised many companies: its effects have had a huge impact on companies' bottom lines – and this means that partnerships are going to be the way forward.

What do you think will represent the single biggest opportunity for printers in 2024 and why?
The changes that are happening in the digital print industry. The technology is developing extremely quickly, and this in itself will represent opportunities for small/medium print companies.

What are your hopes for 2024?
That inflation continues to reduce, interest rates start to fall and companies increase investment in both kit and their teams.

What piece of advice do you wish you had been given in December 2022 to prepare you for the year you’ve just had?
Be patient – and buy more paper!

What was your word or phrase of the year in 2023?
"Really!?"

What, if anything, will you do differently in 2024?
We won't do much differently, however we would like to invest more in kit and the team.

Will you be going to Drupa 2024?
I will try to.

What would be your fantasy technology (or trend) you would like to see on show in Düsseldorf?
That direct mail is better understood as a fantastic media and that the tech is there is support it.

Sprouts, yes or no?
Yes.

Are you making any New Year's resolutions? If so, what?
No point, I always break them!
