ITI opens in Cambridge to focus on UK market

Imaging Technology International (ITI), the US ink-jet technology developer, has opened a division in the UK and is preparing to introduce its narrow web digital press to the market.

ITI has set up its UK base in Cambridge and the operation is being run by Debbie Thorp, who becomes the vice-president for Europe and the Middle East.

"We decided to locate in Cambridge because it is the centre of the European ink-jet market and we have many strategic partners here," Thorp said. "The UK is very strong for ink-jet projects."

Xaar is one of ITI's strategic partners and the firm's deputy chief executive, Nigel Berry, said the Cambridge move would "help strengthen our ties in core ink-jet integration, development and production markets".

Thorp said the UK division would push the Digital Web Press, which is due to hit the European market in April.

"It was originally developed for research and development purposes but we see it as more of a production unit," she said. "It could go into full-scale production and we are looking for partners."

The Digital Web Press has two installations in the US producing black-and-white labels. It prints at speeds of 46m per minute and  has a maximum stock width of 152mm and reels up to 610mm.
