Indian print is prospering, is the message from Wan-Ifra

There is a huge untapped market for print in India, is the chorus at the three-day Wan-Ifra symposium and expo which kicked off in Chennai on 8 September. Sachin Shardul and Rahul Kumar give us a flavour of the newspaper show in India.

The Color Top line of newspaper web offset presses have been installed at Mathrubhumi, the Malayalam daily. Color Top 5000UDI (4x1) is a high performance printing unit with a register accuracy constantly maintained over the range of low to high printing speeds.

Seshagiri Rao, managing director, Tangeer Machinery, the Mumbai-based dealer for TKS in India, said: "Wan-Ifra is a good platform to meet the decision makers from the newspaper industry under one roof. We are doing well at Mathrubhumi and expecting for positive responses and orders from the newspaper printing companies. Opportunities are huge as we are coming with our Jetleader."

Noriyuki Shiba, president and representative director said: "We will demonstrate the TKS Jetleader 1500 during Drupa 2012. That printing press can run up to the speed of 150 meter per minute with 46 to 130 gsm paper. This is a combination of rotary and digital technology and newspaper printers will be on target for personalised newspapers and inserts. An unskilled person can operate the press by pressing a single button only."

The Japanese-based TKS and TKS Group companies are total printing system suppliers for newspaper and commercial printing.

TKS shaftless printing presses are available with several configurations including 2x1, 2x2, 4x1, 4x2 and 6x2.


TechNova grabs order for CTP kit from Gujarat and Indian Express



Technova stall at Wan-Ifra

On the first day of the show, TechNova Imaging Systems, the manufacturer of graphic art consumables booked an order for its entry level CTP equipment from a print firm in Gujarat plus an order for Metijet from Indian Express for its plant in Aurangabad.

The CTP system which was displayed at the stall consisted of Agfa Advantage N-SA, chemistry-free processor from Glunz & Jenson, water and developer filtration from Ruja Automation, plate bend and punch from Glunz & Jenson.

The print firm from Gujarat has opted for the entry level CTP system which consists of Agfa Advantage N-SA CTP platesetter and chemistry-free processor from Glunz & Jenson.

Amit Khurana, national sales manager for newspaper segment at TechNova, said: "All the products which we have displayed at the stall contribute to the green cause in any print firm especially the newspapers."

He explained that one square metre of plate on an average consumes six litres of water but with the use of Ruja Automation filtration system, the same consumption of water comes down to one litre. This is an ideal system for the print firms who do not wish to invest in a chemistry-free processor.

As a part of a green initiative, TechNova will plant trees in the name of the visitors who visit its stall.

Besides the entry level CTP system, TechNova displayed its wide range of products which consisted of chemistry-free Viogreen plate, environmental friendly chemicals, soft proofing software Veripress.


Wifag offers interesting configurations for India


Swiss-based Wifag's Indian representative NBG Printographic Machinery presented new configuration patterns including 2/1, 2/2 and 4/1 with a speed from 45,000 to 90,000 copies per hour.

Nitin Garg, director, NBG Printographic Machinery, said: "Competitive printing solutions is a new segment by the company as the Wifag touched the new lower speed segment and digital printing solution. We are doing well as we have installed a Wifag OF370 at Kolkata-based Ananda Bazaar Patrika group, a couple of months ago."

Wifag digiprint N is the optional for short to medium newspaper production runs. The offset printing press manufacturing company developed a fully format variable cutting and folding solution to match the print possibilities of Wifag digiprint N. 


QuadTech launches AccuCam in India

QuadTech India used Wan Ifra as a launch pad to launch its AccuCam, the colour control and web inspection system.

AccuCam, the image-based closed loop system automatically obtains the target aims point values from a high resolution pre-press file to maintain the accuracy of colour by automatically adjusting ink keys. The system also controls and optimises the ink ratchet for enhancing the inking performance, creating better colour, reduced waste and minimising operators intervention.

Hemant Desai, general manager at QuadTech India, said: "Printers want solutions for achieving more with their investment in capital equipment using production methods to reduce waste and overheads and higher quality standards. QuadTech’s press control technology offers printers the quality and cost savings through continuous technical support and performance guarantee."

QuadTech has completed 10,000 installation of MultiCam cameras of which more than 1,730 MultiCam cameras are installed in India. Besides MultiCam cameras, QuadTech has also installed more than 1,100 Autotron and RGS cameras for register control on newspaper and commercial presses.


Kodak introduces Prosper at Wan-Ifra

Kodak introduced Prosper S20 imprinting system in the Wan-Ifra, 2011. The system can be used for personalised and variable promotions by location, local and hyper local news using geo-coded maps, barcodes and coupons and variable gaming and contests that can drive increased newsstand sales.

The Kodak Prosper S20 Imprinting System generates opportunity with highest speed hybrid digital printing solution by using Kodak stream inkjet technology.

The company claims that this is ideal for newspaper, magazine and insert printers looking for strategies to boost advertisement revenues.

Arnab Maiti, business manager – prepress equipments and newspaper segment, India cluster graphic communications group, said: "This system is for higher speed, better quality and less cost for variable data printing with 4.17 inches head on an offset printing press including heatset web. It is very early to comment on the cost but definitely it will depend on the printer requirement. This system will be marketed and sold by Kodak itself."


Pressline announces the launch of Bookline



Pressline India, the Delhi-based manufacturer of web offset presses has launched its new product Bookline which is a substitute for the sheetfed offset machine to produce books in single- and double-colour.

Satish Bajwa, director at Pressline India, said: "Wan Ifra was a perfect platform for the launch of our new machine Bookline. This new machine will allow publishers and printers to cut down wastage of time, paper and space."

The new Bookline can be installed with double roll stand having the semiautomatic splicing and pasting facility at the minimum speed to avoid the wastage of paper. The machine has the option for spray dampening, brush or alcohol. The dampening and inking system in Bookline comprises of 21 rollers.


Ingersoll Rand installs ink pumping systems at Indian majors



Ingersoll Rand is upbeat. Brijesh Mulik, marketing – fluid handling systems from the company said: "We are in Wan-Ifra to mark our presence in the Indian newspaper industry. Recently we installed our ink pumping systems at Tribune’s plant at Jalandhar. Jagran Prakashan is our major client and we have installed our systems at their Patna and Meerut plant. The cost of the system depends on the configuration and ranges from Rs three laks to Rs 50 lakh or more. It is very difficult to enter in to the market due the strong price war and perception in customer’s mind."

Nova Grafik announces the launch of wide range of Westland and PCO products



Nova Grafik, the Mumbai-based distributor for the graphic art consumables has announced the launch of a wide range of Westland rollers and PCO printing chemicals at Wan Ifra.

Westland is the German manufacturer of the rollers for the print industry, while PCO is the manufacturer and supplier of Fogra certified printing chemicals.

Anish Shroff, director at Nova Grafik, said: "It will be difficult for us to convince the customer to switch over to the new products as they are expensive. Although the rollers from Westland are expensive, but in the long run they deliver quality and have longer life span as compared to the other rollers."

Shroff added: "The chemical solutions from PCO are Fogra certified and therefore needs no additional explanation while marketing. We would like to be associated with the customers who want to upgrade their quality."

According to Shroff, the customers need not maintain the inventory for rollers or send them for coating. The special coating on the Westland rollers last for a longer period and this helps the customers to save on the cost of re-coating the rollers.

Westland supplies the rollers to press manufacturers like KBA, Manroland and Komori.
