The 22pp A5-landscape format public information booklet, which had an initial print run of 25m, has been published by the Home Office and will provide practical advice on what to do in case of a terrorism attack.
A Home Office spokesman confirmed that the Sutton-in-Ashfield firm had been awarded the contract.
It is a major coup for Howitt, which was rescued out of administrative receivership in February when Nick Dixon, Rick Taylor and Mike Hunter bought the company from KPMG Corporate Recovery.
Howitt carried out most of the printing and enclosing itself, and also managed the sub-contracted elements of the job.
The booklet forms part of an 8m government campaign to help the public prepare for terror attacks and other emergencies.
Nationwide distribution will be carried out next month, and once this has been completed, it will then be available in a wide variety of languages, including Arabic, Urdu, Bengali, French, Hindi and Welsh.
The booklet is one of the largest print run contracts since the 25m door-drops for the European Elections, handled by COI Communications, formerly the Central Office for Information, through its print roster.
The Government and a wide range of experts have jointly written, Preparing for Emergencies what you need to know.
These include the emergency services, MI5, the chief medical officer and the Emergency Planning Society.
Information will be provided on; what to do in an emergency, basic first aid, and how the public can help prevent a terrorist attack.
The booklet will be based on the mantra of "Go in, stay in and tune in".
TV and Radio advertisements will also form part of the campaign.
