HNS Signs brews up ale and arty look for beer bus

Taking the phrase ‘road beer’ to its logical conclusion, Sadler’s Brewery in Stourbridge, West Midlands, was sure to roll up to Birmingham’s City Social in style – carrying its crafty nectar to the trade event aboard a distinctive ‘beer bus’.

What was produced?

Sadler’s enlisted recent Fespa Award winners HNS Signs to wrap its single-decker bus and apply a number of elements to both the interior and exterior. Printed media included tap designs to go across the left-side windows, and mock bottle racks to go along the inner right.

What did the job entail?

All designs were printed onto LD3920 polygloss vinyl using a Roland DG XR-640 wide-format printer with four-colour inks from Sun Chemical. A matt lamination film was used for the mock bottle racks and gloss for the window designs, applied by a thermal laminator.

The general body wrap was carried out using polymeric vinyl from Grafityp in battleship grey inside and outside the bus, while text to go along the side of the bus was created using Hexis esotac white five-year vinyl.

All cutting was completed on GCC Puma and Roland Camm-1 Pro cutters.

What challenges were overcome?

A tight deadline of three and a half days was set by Sadler’s ahead of the City Social, meaning the Birmingham-based HNS team had to put in a couple of late nights, while designs were being finalised as the work went along.

“Wrapping on the inside is not fundamentally different to the outside of a vehicle,” said managing director Michelle Henry. “But it is a little challenging because the bus curves inwards and you are working with it above your head. It’s hard on the neck.

“It can be tough work but you don’t mind when it’s enjoyable and a bit different.”

What was the feedback?

HNS was asked to put the job together after Sadler’s was so impressed with the signmaker’s work on its new taproom in Quinton, Northamptonshire.

Sadler’s operations director Jim Pycraft said: “We have further taproom openings planned and it’s clear who we will be using. We’re delighted how HNS has understood our vision and created innovative signage solutions for us and we intend to use them as our creative partner of choice as we continue to grow.”
