GNM to drop international editions

Guardian News and Media (GNM) has continued its transition to a digital-first business, announcing the closure of its international print editions of the <i>Guardian</i> and <i>Observer</i>.

The publisher prints titles in New York, Frankfurt, Madrid, Malta and Cyprus, but will cease production from 1 October.

GNM's announcement comes just a few weeks after it announced plans to concentrate on its digital products as it attempts to fight back from two years of losses of a combined £67m.

Executive director, commercial at GNM, said: "Our online audience topped 50m for the first time in May, and two thirds of visitors to guardian.co.uk come from outside the UK.

"Our international print editions have been a valued part of what we do for a number of years, but as a result of the structural changes affecting all printed newspapers we have been steadily reducing the amount of copies we publish outside the UK since 2010 due to reasons of demand and cost.

"We will continue to serve our growing international audience via our website and other digital platforms and we will also increase the distribution of Guardian Weekly.

He added that the move was one of a number of steps as part of the move, which will be followed by the launch of Kindle and iPad editions.
