PRINT BUYER
“I haven’t heard of PEFC, but a lot of the print buyers in the National Trust are using FSC-accredited suppliers and I think it’s a good accreditation to have. We’re actually trying to move away from FSC as part of a green policy I’m implementing; we’re looking at phasing that out and phasing in post-consumer waste. We already produce our high-run print, such as magazines and handbooks, on post-consumer waste and, hopefully, by the summer of next year, we’ll be using 100% post-consumer waste, which will make FSC redundant.”

“The difference is that PEFC is not recognised by the WWF. FSC is and we feel that it is the more robust accreditation, which is why we’ve opted for just that one and not gone for PEFC – it’s more independent. That’s the same reaction we’ve got from paper merchants. Another factor is that FSC is recognised by environmental groups such as Friends of the Earth and Greenpeace. It is good for the industry as a whole.”

“I have heard of FSC, but generally I believe this is promoted by our paper merchants. From what I understand of it, the paper is from sustainably managed forests. I had not heard of PEFC before, and I’m not sure of the difference between it and FSC. We are currently looking at ISO 14001 environmental management accreditation. I would probably link this to the FSC programme. I think most printers are now reviewing their own environmental policies as there is a strong demand for environmental awareness.”

“We are both PEFC- and FSC-certified because we believe traceability of supplies and resources is important. PEFC is an independent organisation concerned with sustainable forest management that maintains biodiversity, and their potential now and in the future. The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is a global forest certification body offering independent verification of forest management and timber products. Having both ensures a continuous chain from forest to consumer. Several customers ask for FSC, but not many are aware of PEFC.”
