Europe on track to meet paper and board recycling target

Europe is on target to reach its voluntary paper and board recycling rate of 66% by 2010, according to the European Recovered Paper Council (ERPC).

In 2007, recycling in Europe reached 64.5% as 60.1m tonnes of paper were collected and sent to paper mills.

This is an increase of 14.5%, or 7.6m tonnes, on paper that was collected and recycled in 2004 – the base year for the target.

ERPC said its monitoring report shows that the voluntary commitment is making progress. It focuses on prevention of waste, recycling and the quality of recovered paper.
