Environment (-100 employees) - winner: Cambrian Printers

For this award, the judges were looking for evidence of a proactive policy to reduce the environmental impact from within smaller businesses. Entrants were asked to state environmental objectives and demonstrate how they had prioritised the areas for action

The quality of environmental policies and their implementation depends heavily on the commitment of everyone in an organisation taking an active interest.

The judges were looking for companies that could demonstrate a commitment to environmental issues despite the difficult trading period. These companies did not necessarily buy expensive pieces of kit, but took more of an education and awareness route that encouraged employees and suppliers to actively participate in activities to reduce their environmental impact as an organisation. Examples included reducing waste, energy use, recycling and reuse; ideas that could also reduce the companies’ running costs.

Key to this year’s decision were: identifying effective and sustainable ways of improving the companies’ environmental performance; and reducing the effects on the local community. Cambrian ‘ticked’ all these boxes; its commitment from the top was well supported with the desire to do the right thing for the environment and this attitude was consistent throughout the business and from all its employees.
