The firm has invested €2.2m (£1.8m) in refurbishing and remodelling an additional 3,500sqm unit on the Bar Hill industrial park, also home to its main headquarters operation.
The new Saxon Way site includes a 500sqm demonstration centre featuring a range of kit including the N610i inkjet label press and K600i overprinting module, alongside training, testing and product development operations.
Group managing director Nigel Bond said the investment reflected Domino’s expectations for growth in the digital print space. The firm has doubled the number of employees in its digital division over the past three years, creating 50 new positions.
“Digital printing will be a big growth driver for Domino in the next few years, this is about transformation and technology change, and it will grow significantly.”
Digital print currently accounts for 12% of sales at the £335m turnover group, with coding and marking making up the lion’s share of sales.
“I can see it [digital printing] will be 25% of sales in the not-too-distant future, and we intend to carry on investing. More acquisitions are on the way, and we have the balance sheet to do that,” added Bond, who said the firm was “absolutely on track” to meet or exceed its target to sell a further 25 N610i systems this year.
Long-serving employee Barry Few, who joined the firm as a trainee engineer 32 years ago at the age of 16, and is now worldwide technical training manager for digital printing, cut the ribbon to officially open the unit.
He said: “Commercial and digital printing has been my whole life, and I’m very proud to be part of the history of Domino. The key thing that makes Domino different is the people – I’m opening this facility for all those people, and their dedication, loyalty and attention to detail.”
The firm also announced a number of new features on its range. See separate story here.
