After working in a variety of print roles, Cherry set up Essex-based Communications in Print in the 1980s. He grew the firm into a £6.5m-turnover operation and sold it to Pims in 2002.
When the Pims business subsequently unravelled in 2006, Cherry’s operation was taken over by Cunningham Graphics International, now DG3.
“In 2006 I agreed to join for three months to help with the transition; it’s been a long three months!” Cherry said. “I have spent 45 years in the print industry and have a lot of people to thank. I can’t think of any better way than through PrintWeek as I know most of the people I want to thank will then see it.”
Cherry said his retirement plans included travelling to Australia and New Zealand, and “playing more golf and getting my handicap into single figures”.
He currently plays off 10.
DG3 director Barry Page said: “I have known Phil for over 20 years, the last eight years of which we have worked together at DG3. I am now pleased to say we are not just work colleagues, we are good friends.
“Come the end of August Phil’s 45 years in print will come to an end, and l just want to say that not only DG3, but the print family is going to miss him and the contribution he has made to our industry. He has been a valued member of the senior management team here and has helped develop DG3 into the organisation we are today. So a big thank you from myself and his work colleagues – we wish Phil every happiness for the future where he can now concentrate on his golf handicap.”
Cherry will not be directly replaced as he has handed over his accounts as part of a succession plan that has involved a gradual reduction in hours.
