Designer creates chair made of HP DesignJet-printed pages

Graphic designer Stefan Sagmeister has created a chair design using paper printed on an HP DesignJet L65500.

The idea for the Darwin Chair came about when Sagmeister was designing furniture for his New York studio for which he wanted to maintain a graphic, rather than form, focus.

It features 230 printed sheets of HP DuPont Tyvek as cushioning, each of which has a different design printed on it, so the user can change the chair by turning a 'page'.

"Initially, the base was made out of wood, but we changed it to stainless steel. This allowed it to become skinnier and free swinging, so it really became all about the paper.

"There was just a question of how to make the paper the star and have the structure underneath it recede as much as possible."

The designer expects the piece, which was produced by US printer Splash!, to be durable, lasting 30 years or more, and for each sheet to have a secondary use as a framed art print.
