Cubic Digital started life as a traditional commercial printer, and has steadily built up a successful business printing high quality promotional products, such as posters, flyers and booklets for commercial clients.
But almost 18 months ago Cubic Digital decided to spend £15,000 on a Roland wide format VersaCAMM VS-540 printer/cutter to work alongside a Heidelberg B3 litho press and Konica Minolta digital press.
The VersaCAMM, which is 54" wide, replaced a 44" Epson inkjet printer and was purchased from large format print dealer Perfect Colours.
Cubic Digital has since been able to significantly extend its product range to include vinyls and external signage.
Stuart Joseph, owner of Cubic Digital, which has a turnover of almost £500,000 and three staff, said he thought the machine had added around £20,000 to the company’s turnover a year. "It now accounts for 5% of our profit," he said.
"With the old machine, the types of graphics and applications we could print were fairly limited, as were the materials we could print on.
"To maintain the viability of the business, we needed a more productive, long-term solution. We researched the market when we looked to purchase a new wide format machine and the Roland brand and its technology stood above the rest."
Joseph said one of the values of the machine that was difficult to quantify was the fact that it had helped the printer become more of a one-stop shop for all of their customers’ printing needs. "There’s value in that as then there’s less chance of someone else poaching your client," he said.
He said the company had also recently invested in a Duplo DB280 perfect binder for £6,000 plus VAT, and it was looking to buy a large format laminator in the next couple of months, but had not yet decided which machine to purchase.
