Hickson, who replaces Michael Smith, brings board experience from his current positions as chairman of Anglian Water Group and senior independent director of London and Continental Railways.
Howes will become a member of the Audit, Remuneration and Nominations Committees and will chair the Audit Committee from next year's annual general meeting.
Chartered accountant Howes has previously worked as an audit and advisory partner at Deloitte.
Communisis chief executive Steve Vaughn said Hickson's experience in corporate governance, strategy and financial matters would be "invaluable as we continue to effect our growth plans".
He added: "Nigel will add a valuable new dimension to our board thanks to the experience he has gained advising a broad range of companies during his time as a senior partner with major accounting firms."
