Colourstream completes 1.7m spend with finishing kit spree and Speedmaster buy

Colourstream has boosted its productivity by 40% with the installation of a Speedmaster XL 75-10-P as part of a 1.7m investment that also included a Stahlfolder KH 82 and a ST300 saddlestitcher.

The Derby-based commercial printer has replaced two SM 74-10-Ps with the new press and the UK's first Speedmaster SM 52-10-P Anicolor long perfector, installed last autumn.

It will also take delivery of a new Stahlfolder KH 82 in the next few weeks, as well as installing water-cooled peripherals and ink pumping systems from Technotrans to improve pressroom conditions and reduce energy and consumables waste.

A secondhand ST300 saddlestitcher will also be purchased in the near future to enable total front-to-back control of jobs.

John Greene, managing director of the £3.5m-turnover company, said the XL 75 would run with Inpress Control inline spectrophotometry and would lift productivity by 40%.

He said: "We got the press because we've recently had some new companies come on board and they have been demanding higher quality.

"We also wanted to keep abreast of the most recent developments in the marketplace, as at the moment we're all suffering from low prices and competition. Every day, we see that the market is diminishing and that there is a downward pressure on price."

The 26-staff company handles a range of commercial work for print management companies and large corporate businesses and it is hoped that the new press will help expand those markets.

Greene said: "We are particularly looking to establish a long-term future relationship with companies in the print management market."

The XL 75 will handle print runs averaging 5,000 sheets per job with a 10-minute makeready and with no more than 250 waste sheets.

With the larger impression cylinder, the company can accommodate a wider range of stocks will also allow  be more environmentally friendly, with reduced start up waste and the ability to run with just 3% alcohol.
