BPIF backs CBI's call for 'urgent' move on carbon reduction

The BPIF has welcomed a "groundbreaking" report from the Confederation of British Industries (CBI) on climate change as "a positive and realistic step in the right direction" for UK business.

BPIF public affairs executive Bob Toal echoed CBI director-general Richard Lambert in saying "businesses need to be green to grow".

According to 'Climate change: Everyone's business', the UK is likely to miss its carbon reduction targets for 2020 and needs to "adopt a greater sense of urgency" if it is to hit 2050 goals.

The report is the culmination of 10 months' work by the CBI Climate Change Task Force, comprising 18 representatives of some of the world's biggest companies.

Toal told printweek.com that while the CBI's task force represents the UK's "leading corporate players", the BPIF is supporting smaller organisations that lack the resources to turn their attention to carbon reduction.

"We are doing it on their behalf. We are also training them in cost-cutting measures through BPIF business and the accreditation process for ISO 14001, FSC and PEFC," he said.

"In short, we are prepared for what this report is proposing."
