Ian Lawson’s From the Land Comes the Cloth, a 432-page book of photographs of tweed and landscape in the Scottish Outer Herbrides, was printed on a Heidelberg 162 XL. The machine is the only press of its kind in Britain and based at Berforts BT&D’s factory in Frome, Somerset.
Managing director Gerald White said: “Berforts BT&D is extremely proud to have received the award. We take pride in the beautiful books we manufacture in England and to receive recognition for this is truly wonderful.”
The book was printed on 170gsm matt paper, applied with a gloss coating on the press, and the board-and-cloth cover had French-folded jacket. Key account director Jeremy Snell said: “When we first saw the book off the press we though 'whoa, this is one of the best books we've every printed'.”
Author Ian Lawson, said: “Venturing into the world of high-end self publishing was made all the easier by the guiding hands of my printers. Berforts BT&D has produced the book I aspired to. From the Land Comes the Cloth has already travelled far and wide across the globe to wonderful appraise. The words 'quality' and 'British' never fail to be spoken of.”
The awards ceremony, held at the Grange St Paul's Hotel in London, recognised the best in British book production and design, with area categories in digitally printed books to exhibition catalogues. Berforts 125 full-time staff are based across its three facilities in Hastings, Stevenage and Eynsham.
