BBC leads UK with first FSC book run

BBC Books has become the UKs first major book publisher to use Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified paper.

Two books, More Nation's Favourite Poems and a new edition of Nation's Favourite Poems, will carry the FSC logo, to confirm that the paper has been independently certified as being from a sustainable source.

The move follows the decision by BBC Magazines to switch its flagship title Radio Times to FSC certified stock earlier this year (PrintWeek, 10 June).

The text paper used by both books is 90gsm Munken Print Extra grade, supplied by Swedish paper manufacturer Arctic Paper.

"We are trying to highlight the benefits of using FSC certified paper, and we are pleased the BBC has chosen Munken Print Extra," said Arctic Paper UK managing director Simon Ricketts. As well as displaying the FSC logo on the cover, both books will detail the FSC claim inside.

BBC Books production manager John Martin said that the long-term goal was to gain FSC accreditation for all the BBC's illustrated titles, but that the availability of FSC-certified coated paper was still an issue.

"BBC Worldwide has shown a clear commitment to taking its environmental and social responsibilities seriously," said FSC UK's marketing communications manager Nick Cliffe. The initial print run for More Nation's Favourite Poems is 15,000 copies.

The books were printed by Martin's of Berwick, and the covers printed on Gemini C1-S 240gsm, which is produced by Scottish manufacturer Inveresk.
