Autobond cross-cutter enables printers to make their own metalised boards

Finishing equipment manufacturer Autobond has said that its new sheeting device offers a cheaper alternative for printers wanting a metalised finish.

The CC76 cross-cutter is capable of slicing through substrates as thick as 500 micron polyester – 250 micron each side – at speeds of 60 metres per minute.

Managing director John Gilmore said the machine would appeal to packaging printers who will be able to save money by applying metalised film to a low-cost board, rather than buying in metal board.

"A company could effectively produce its own metalised board, which would then be ready for printing whether this is for a carton for a tube of toothpaste, or something similar," said Gilmore.

"But it isn't just for metalised board. It can be used for mouse mats or any other difficult substrate."

The machine can be fixed onto any Autobond model, and Gilmore said it could also be used alongside other makes of laminator.

Gilmour said: "We get asked for it all the time. Metalised board is expensive, but metalised film is a fraction of the cost and this can easily be applied to a relatively cheap board.

The first machine has been installed at a company in Toronto, Canada.
