APP assesses prospect of FSC accreditation

Asia Pulp & Paper (APP) has announced it is investigating Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification, after working for the past two years on cleaning up its act.

APP deputy chief executive Michael Black said that the firm felt it was eligible for FSC certification, which it was looking to achieve.

Black said APP was currently in the "scoping stages" for some of its plantations in China, with regard to embarking on the FSC route.
"In the medium term, we would like to produce some FSC product," said Black.

The Indonesian pulp and paper giant has also welcomed filed assessments on its Indah Kiat pulp and paper mill and Lontar Papyrus pulp mill in Riau and Jambi in Sumatra, by independent verification company SG.

In both cases Black said the firm had received a clean bill of health, with SGS finding no evidence of illegal materials being supplied through the supply chain within APP's fibre suppliers.

APP has also reduced the number of its outside suppliers in terms of fibre supply, from 68 to less than 10.
