Antalis: rivals will follow our lead

Antalis has launched its print services sector - one of five new business sectors following the re-organisation of its merchanting arm.

"Our competitors are looking at us to achieve results," said print services sector director Herv Poncin. "If we succeed you can expect others to follow."

The five new sectors are print, office, packaging, screen and sign and promotional products.

Antalis has also launched its pan-European division in Italy, with France set to follow in the next few weeks.

As part of its new strategy, Antalis aims to broaden its geographical coverage across Europe, along with Asia, South Africa and South and North America.

"We also hope to develop across the Baltic countries and have acquired 20% of a merchanting firm in Chile," said Poncin.

The UK strategy will focus on customer-specific products, defining customer needs and giving closer attention to service costs.

"We want to grow, but we still want to make money," he added.

And it may introduce other sectors, including inks and plates, at a later stage.

"From April 2001 we will be totally in charge of our own balance sheet and in charge of our destiny. We will only be able to develop and acquire companies with our own finances," said Poncin stated.

Antalis will also develop its e-commerce side, and introduce a "university", where its sales force will be trained.
