Agreement between GPMU and St Ives halts Westerham action

Industrial action at St Ives Westerham has been halted following agreement between the firm and the union on the four layoffs.

"We're delighted it's been called off because nobody wanted a dispute," said GPMU South East of England branch secretary Dennis Spencer. "Common sense prevailed and now they're going to move forward."

The overtime ban came into force last Monday (26 July) while talks between the firm and the union continued. The action was finally resolved today (2 August).

The redundancies of the four press minders, due to increased pressure on margins (PrintWeek, 22 July), will stand. In return talks, at chapel level, will continue in the hope of avoiding a similar breakdown of communication.

No one at St Ives was available for comment as PrintWeek went to press.
