Abbeygate is acquisition target

Optichrome, the Woking-based printer and MIS development company, is being tipped to take over Ashford printer Abbeygate, PrintWeek has learned.

Optichrome chairman Ted Stephens declined to comment, but a source at Abbeygates Middlesex plant confirmed to PrintWeek that the Woking firm was set to purchase the company.

The source also said that Abbeygate no longer had a managing director because it was ceasing to exist at the end of the week as it was being acquired.

Optichrome was at number 431 in PrintWeeks Top 500 2002 with sales of almost 4.8m for the year ending April 2002, while Abbeygate, which came in at number 267, had sales of nearly 8.1m for the year ending March 2001 and employed 66 staff.

Optichrome also has a MIS development arm, Optichrome Computer Systems (OCSL).

Abbeygates print wing is part of a communications group that includes data management, mailing and distribution, personalisation and design.
