4Sight to close

4Sight, the UK-based software wing of WAM!NET that developed Transmission Manager, is to close, with effect from 12 September, with the loss of 18 jobs.

The decision to shut the business follows the 1.86m purchase of WAM!NET by Savvis Communications announced last week (PrintWeek, 7 August). The deal did not include either 4Sight or WAM!NETs government services wing.

4Sight general manager Chris Beck said the decision to close the firm was taken due to market saturation by alternative broadband providers, which had led to a reduction in demand for ISDN products.

ISDN has been a constantly declining market, and the reality of it is we could not afford to keep the business going without revenues coming in, said Beck.

The high reliability of 4Sight technology also meant that users had little need to upgrade to later versions, which had a major effect on sales, he added.

The future of the UK office of Hermstedt, the ISDN and ADSL services provider, is also unclear.

The firm is in talks with a view to establishing a partnership operation. Group chief executive Georj Hermstedt said the restructuring could lead to a reduction in staffing levels, and that customers should contact the German office for support for the time being. He hoped to finalise a deal for the UK operation within a week.

Although 4Sight is looking for someone to offer support for its users, its website will continue to offer support until 31 December.

4Sight was established in 1989 and was bought by WAM!NET in 1998.

(*) Workflow software producer Group Logic and its UK and Ireland distributor, NCS Integrated Solutions, have announced a programme to allow WAM!NET users to switch to MassTransit Enterprise.

Group Logic is extending a special offer to WAM!NET customers that buy MassTransit before 30 September 2003.
