Rising star: Thomas Barrie, pre-press apprentice, Authentix Security Print Solutions

Barrie: "I want to become the best graphic designer I can possibly be”

Thomas is 19 and has recently passed his first anniversary of starting to work in the printing industry at Consett-based security printing specialist Authentix SPS.

He was one of the successful entrants in The Printing Charity’s Rising Star awards programme, held over the summer.

How did you find your way into the industry?

I visited a local apprenticeship event and found Authentix SPS. I found what they presented very interesting and informative

Did you know anything about print beforehand?

I had some experience with photography and photo editing but nothing professional, just helping friends where I could

What does your role entail?

Pre-press processes like plate making and proofing, as well as graphic design

What’s the most enjoyable or interesting thing about it?

The best thing is the people I work with. But I also love graphic design and I find pre-press and how the process works very interesting

Do you have an ideal career path mapped out?

I would really like to stay on at Authentix after my apprenticeship, as a member of the studio team

What would be your dream job (print related)?

I want to become the best graphic designer I can possibly be

What would be your dream job (not print related)?

A professional footballer (if I was any good at football)

Who do you view as an inspiring person?

My manager Lyndsey [studio and office manager Lyndsey Brett] inspires me a lot to try and be the best version of myself

What’s top of your playlist at the moment?

I’ve been listening to a lot of The Strokes recently

Which box set would you recommend?

The Inbetweeners

What’s your most-used app?

Instagram

What has surprised you most about working in the printing industry?

How the entire process works, from the order being placed all the way through to being despatched. I think it’s very interesting

What could the printing industry be doing more of to entice young people into print?

The printing industry is quite under-represented in advertising and media. Maybe if more young people were made aware of how so many products we use in our day-to-day lives are produced through the industry, then it could encourage young people to be a part of what many people don’t realise is a big part of our lives
