Rising star: Riley Macrae Duffy, digital print apprentice, CX Services

"I would try to make the world a better place by working together with others"

Riley recently turned 21. He started working in the printing industry in the summer of 2023, and since taking up his apprenticeship at CX Services has proved to be a real asset for the Dunoon-based direct mail and data-driven marketing business.

What did you study, and did you have a particular career in mind?

I studied graphic design, English and religious studies. After high school, because Covid was prevalent, I applied to do an administration and information HND online

How did you find your way into the industry?

I was working in a bakery and not enjoying it. I was applying for multiple jobs each day and finally got an interview at CX Services, which was the one I was aiming for

Did you know anything about print beforehand?

Very little in hindsight

What does your role entail?

I am responsible for sending files to print, printing, quality checks, guillotining, general warehouse duties and using the envelope inserter machine

What’s the most enjoyable or interesting thing about it?

I feel very supported and have an awesome team. I love learning more about even the smallest details of printing

What would be your dream job (print related)?

Digital print technician

What would be your dream job (not print related)?

Working for Fortiche – the French studio who made the show Arcane

Who do you view as an inspiring person?

Abraham Lincoln, Thomas Jefferson and Henry Cavill. I’ve listened to their audiobiographies. I found it all terribly fascinating

Do you have a ‘side hustle’?

I massively enjoy 3D printing and 3D model making

What’s top of your playlist at the moment?

Galactikraken

Which box set would you recommend?

Arcane – it’s visually spectacular and the story is amazing

What’s your most-used app?

Discord, I use it to keep in touch with friends

What has surprised you most about working in print?

I was surprised by how much goes into it

What could the printing industry be doing more of to entice young people into print?

Tell people what they can learn in the print industry and what skills they can develop, and offer career progression, additional training, and new learning opportunities
