Q&A: Zoe Deadman Sales manager, KCS Print

Zoe is relatively new to the industry having spent three years in print, but as she was brought up in a printing family she “learned a lot at the dinner table”.

She’s married with two small boys and any spare time is spent trying to improve the house bought in a derelict state three years ago: “Whenever I think I’m getting somewhere, something else comes up”.

Why did you get into printing?

I came to printing after a career in journalism. After moving back to the UK I wanted something to get my teeth stuck into

Who would play you in a movie about your life?

Angelina Jolie, She always seems to be juggling multiple jobs whilst also looking after her kids. She is obviously a strong character which I like to think we both have in common

What is your dream bit of kit?

I would like a Domino K630i but when it offers full colour

What would you most like to print?

I like to print any job that is the first in its sector. A customer that uses us to produce a job that is innovative and improves the customer journey makes us all proud of the impact our products are having on the industry

Who do you admire most in the industry?

Dave Broadway, chairman at CFH. He took a family business and developed it through innovation and technology

What is your favourite album?

Logo by Kevin Johansen – A trilingual album with a sunny South American vibe

What book are you reading at the moment?

I’m currently reading Smiley’s People by John Le Carre. I have to read something fairly simple to get a good night’s sleep

Cat or dog, or…?

Dog definitely. I have a gorgeous black mutt who we found as a street dog while living in Buenos Aires. She spent five months travelling around Argentina with us in our VW camper van. She had to fly from Buenos Aires to Paris with my husband before I drove over to France to collect her. The first time she saw a pheasant she was petrified – she was more used to armadillos!

What is the strangest job you’ve had?

I was sent out for a week, 12 hours a day, during my half-term holiday aged 12 with a local crab fisherman. My job was to cut the tendon on the crabs claws so they couldn’t fight each other. It seemed cruel at first, until one got me...

Who would you like to be stuck on a desert island with?

Barack Obama, he would be great to talk with, wouldn’t mind getting his hands dirty and there’s more chance of people coming to find him than me

Where would you like to be now?

My husband is currently working in Spoleto in Umbria an Etruscan town in Central Italy – that sounds like a pretty good option currently

Where would you go if you could time-travel?

I would go back to the Western Eye Hospital in London in 1996 and put some cyanide in the tea of Bashar al-Assad, now president of Syria but then a trainee ophthalmologist. It would have saved millions from devastation and horror

What was your childhood obsession?

Horses. I spent every day outside riding, looking after and talking about ponies

What is the worst kind of print?

Sloppy print that shows the absolute minimum of effort

What advice would you give to your teenage self?

Confidence isn’t everything, you need to work hard too
